What is Literacy Skills Class?
Literacy Skills is an elective that a student may choose to take if they are part of the Jon Peterson Scholarship Program.
In this class we will focus on assisting each student with the work that they are receiving in each class, ensuring that they are receiving support for any subjects or assignments that they may be struggling with.
The expectation is that each student works on something from their classes. Because of this, you may find that your student is not bring home any homework. That is ok, as much of it will have been done during our Literacy Skills class.
Students will complete a daily literacy activity for a grade through the program called Achieve 3000. The readings are tailored to their reading levels from a pre-test that was given during the 1st week of class.
Lit Skills Expectations
Will all accommodations from the IEP be followed while at Elder?
While we strive to meet each accommodation that is listed, it is not always possible for us to do so. Accepting the Jon Peterson Scholarship means waiving FAPE rights, and as such, we serve the students to the best of our abilities.
What is our purpose as Intervention Specialists?
Our purpose as Intervention Specialists is to help students with mild/moderate disabilities throughout their educational careers. At Elder, we work specifically with students who enter the school through the Jon Peterson Scholarship Program. That means we work with students using the IEPs created in their home districts and ensure they work on their goals and academics with our support, as long as they continue to qualify for special education services.
How do they receive grades in Literacy Skills class?
In previous years, students received a Lit Skills grade by averaging all their grades. Unfortunately, if a student struggled in their classes, it showed in their Lit Skills grade as well, which didn't reflect what they were truly doing in class. This year, they are graded in class using the literacy program Achieve3000, IXL (math), and a weekly participation grade. Those grades are specific to Lit Skills.
What is Achieve 3000?
Achieve 3000 is a literacy program that tailors readings to each individual student's reading level. Students receive daily articles to read, and then answer questions based off of those readings. The answers to those questions goes into the grade for their Lit Skills class.
How can I get a tutor for my student?
Tutors are set up by the counseling department based on the needs of the student, specific to what they're struggling with. If you or your student feel they need a tutor, you can contact one of the intervention specialists (Mrs. Craft or Mr. Kronk) and we will inform the counseling department of their needs.
